THE NUKED BLOOD SCANDAL
Susie Boniface is an expert on the history of the UK's nuclear weapon trials and the British veterans ordered to take part.
She has reported on this unique injustice since 2006, interviewing the veterans and their families, leading a major BBC documentary as special advisor, co-ordinating media campaigns and investigating allegations of a criminal cover-up.
Her work has uncovered evidence of misconduct at the highest levels of government. It has led to a major crime review by Thames Valley Police, debates in Parliament, and a renewed legal claim. It also sparked the biggest declassification of atomic files in British history, when the Merlin database was opened. She later led a team of research students at the University of Liverpool in examining the files.
In 2022, her 'Medal For Heroes' campaign led to a decision by His Majesty King Charles III to award the veterans their first official recognition, the Nuclear Test Medal.
In interviews she has referred to the scandal as her 'white whale' story, which she hooked by chance 2006 when an editor tasked her with a one-off story about nuclear veterans.
